It is with enormous sadness that we share the loss of our beautiful lead mare, Lemmy (Lemesos), who passed away from severe colic.

Lemmy was 21 years old and had been part of the MoonAcre herd for 10 years. A successful racing mare, she arrived at MoonAcre in 2016 with a serious knee injury. Ellie nursed her back to health, and Lemmy went on to become a confident, respected lead mare.

She also became a second mother to Flicka, who had been separated from her own mother and was facing euthanasia before MoonAcre stepped in. Their bond was incredibly special.

Despite hours of treatment and the efforts of experienced horse people from across Cyprus, Lemmy could not be saved. Her loss has devastated us, and Flicka and the rest of the herd are now grieving the loss of a very special member of their family.

We’re so happy to officially introduce the MoonAcre Seven – seven beautiful puppies who arrived at MoonAcre Sanctuary needing a safe place to grow, and who have already captured the hearts of everyone here.

But there is something especially meaningful about their names.

Rather than simply choosing names ourselves, we invited kind-hearted supporters to name a puppy by making a donation towards their care.

Every donation helps towards the many costs involved in raising a litter of puppies — including food, veterinary care, vaccinations, preventative treatments and the preparations they will eventually need before they can travel to their forever homes.

So each of these seven puppies now carries a name that was chosen by someone who has already played a small but very important part in their story.

A week ago, we came across this beautiful mum on the side of the road in a village we didn’t know. She was lactating and clearly had puppies somewhere, but despite that, she clung to us and seemed desperate for help.

We couldn’t take her without knowing where her puppies were, so we had to leave her behind.

A week later, a photograph of the very same dog appeared on Facebook. There was an appeal for someone to help get her off the streets.

We immediately returned to the village.

And, incredibly, we found her.

A kind local family had been feeding her throughout her pregnancy, and she had given birth to her puppies beneath a bush in their garden.

There were seven surviving puppies – tiny babies no more than a couple of weeks old. 5 girls and 2 boys.

Mum and all seven puppies were brought safely to MoonAcre, where they can finally be warm, fed and protected.

As the sun began to set over the fields, Sergia, Arabella, Delgado, Sushi and Paris enjoyed one of their favourite parts of the day – an off-lead adventure with our wonderful volunteer dog walker Zwen.

The five friends came racing back through the trees at full speed, tails wagging and ears flapping.

We are incredibly grateful to Zwen and all of our volunteers who give their time, energy and love to the animals at MoonAcre. Their dedication transforms ordinary evenings into unforgettable adventures and helps our dog prepare for life with their future families.
