FROM OUR FOUNDER;

Friends, I want to talk to you about our Sanctuary.

To me, MOONACRE feels like one of the most special places on God’s Earth. Love and happiness pours out of every corner of this place. Our wonderful family of staff and volunteers enjoy their work, and the animals we take care of are as healthy and happy as we can make them.

At this time when many animal welfare organisations are struggling to keep afloat, we are no exception! This year, 2023, has been catastrophic in terms of basic running costs. Due to price rises, our weekly feed bill (with discount) has risen to a staggering Euro 490 – yes, that really is WEEKLY!

The scope of work at MOONACRE is unique. Our Sanctuary exists to provide care for the most vulnerable animals: the physically disabled, and the elderly in particular. There are daily veterinary visits and specialist medications needed to maintain quality of life across the range of species residing here. For example. most of our dogs are disabled, and almost every one of them has come to us as a referral from the authorities, veterinary professionals, rescuers, or desperate individuals. They have come to us because we are the only option available for them in Cyprus.

Our family income, and every donated cent, is entirely committed to keeping our Sanctuary bills paid, but we do not always succeed in covering our running costs. The burden is enormous. Despite our best efforts, we cannot meet the increase of the weekly animal feed bill to Euro 490.

I am appealing to YOU, our friends and supporters, and our followers on social media, to please make a donation to help us meet the Sanctuary food bills. We do not receive credit from suppliers, so we are in a very difficult situation right now. To get through the week, we MUST find Euro 490 to cover the food bills.

CAN YOU HELP?

I began this post by describing MOONACRE as a very special place. We are blessed to spend our lives caring for these animals who depend so much on us. We get back in return more than we deserve in love and loyalty. Our Sanctuary needs YOUR HELP right now, so please take a look at these photos of some of the dogs we are asking you to support with your donation.

PAYPAL donations reach us faster than bank transfers: our account is “sixteensofahounds@yahoo.com” and please select the GIFT option.

Luna – 3 Years since her rescue

January 2023 to now.

Three years ago, 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔’s life was hanging by a thread.

Early that morning, trails of blood were found in a garden, leading to a stray dog local families had grown deeply fond of. 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔 had been shot at close range, execution-style, through the top of her head. The bullet exited through her left eye, leaving her in severe shock and unable to move.

What followed were weeks of emergency care, pain management, and constant monitoring. Against all odds, 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔 survived. More than that — she forgave the world that had been unimaginably cruel to her.

Today, 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔 is gentle, affectionate, and quietly trusting. She loves calm companionship, soft beds, and the simple comfort of feeling safe. She is brilliant with children, and she’s a joy to walk — happy both on and off the lead, taking everything in with a soft, steady confidence.

But three years is far too long for a dog like 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔 to be living in a sanctuary instead of a loving home of her own.

If you think you could offer 𝗟𝗨𝗡𝗔 the calm, compassionate home she deserves, please get in touch or complete an adoption application.

Welcoming 2026

As we step into 2026, we want to take a moment to reflect on the year behind us and the hope ahead.

In 2025, we said some very emotional goodbyes – and hello to new beginnings – as six of our dogs went to live with their forever families, beginning a new chapter in their lives. Seeing them leave MoonAcre to start safe, loved lives of their own is the reason we do what we do. We are endlessly grateful to the families who opened their homes and hearts.

As the new year begins, our biggest wish is for the seven wonderful dogs currently waiting for their forever families to finally find them.
We hope that Liam, Luna, Arabella, Ghost, Benbo, Paris, and Buster will each get their chance at the love, stability, and companionship they deserve.

Thank you to everyone who has supported MoonAcre – through volunteering, adopting, donating, sharing our stories, or simply caring. Your kindness makes every rescue, every recovery, and every happy ending possible.

Here’s to 2026, to new beginnings, and to more lives changed for the better.

A Merry Christmas from MoonAcre Sanctuary!

Wishing all our wonderful supporters a peaceful, joy-filled Christmas.

Thank you for every donation, share, kind message, and moment of love you’ve shown us this year – we’re so grateful!

A very special thank you to the six amazing families who welcomed Jasper, Poppy, Sophie, Moss (Suzy), Sid, and Sherlock into their forever homes.

From all of us at MoonAcre Merry Christmas!

Agatha: From Thorns to Forever

In late November, we responded to a Facebook report about a tiny abandoned puppy in a nearby village. We found a brave 5-month-old girl who had survived alone for 20 days in a thicket of thorns. Malnourished, anaemic, and exhausted, she was rushed to the vet and brought back to MoonAcre, where she received food, warmth, and plenty of care. We named her Agatha, meaning “thorns” in Greek, to honour the place she endured until help arrived.

We’re thrilled to share that Agatha’s adoption has been approved! She will be renamed Grace and is preparing to travel to her forever home in Belgium this February. Her health is excellent, she has received her first vaccination, and she’s ready to start her exciting new life.
